Preparing Your Skin for an IPL Photofacial

IPL photofacial Valencia, CA

Most people focus on what happens during and after an IPL photofacial. The preparation phase gets less attention, but it matters just as much. What you do, and don’t do, in the weeks leading up to your appointment directly affects both the safety of the treatment and the quality of your results.

Intense Pulsed Light works by delivering broad-spectrum light energy into the skin to target pigment, redness, and vascular irregularities. For that process to work safely and effectively, your skin needs to be in the right condition going in.

Sun Exposure Is the Most Important Variable

This is the non-negotiable one. Active sun exposure and IPL photofacial treatments don’t mix well. Tanned skin absorbs light energy differently than untanned skin, which increases the risk of uneven treatment results and, in some cases, unwanted pigment changes.

The standard recommendation is to avoid direct sun exposure for at least four weeks before your appointment. That means no sunbathing, no tanning beds, and no extended time outdoors without broad-spectrum SPF protection. For Valencia residents who spend significant time outside year-round, this requires some real planning.

If you’ve had recent sun exposure and your skin is visibly tanned when you arrive for your appointment, a well-trained Esthetician working under physician direction will recognize this and may recommend rescheduling. It’s not an arbitrary rule. It’s about keeping the treatment safe and the results predictable.

Skincare Products to Pause Before Treatment

Several common skincare ingredients can make the skin more sensitive to light-based treatments. The following should typically be paused in the weeks before a Valencia IPL photofacial:

  • Retinoids and retinol. These accelerate cell turnover and increase photosensitivity. Most protocols recommend stopping use two to four weeks before treatment.
  • Alpha hydroxy acids and glycolic acid. These exfoliating ingredients thin the outer skin layer and can increase sensitivity. Pause these for at least one to two weeks prior.
  • Beta hydroxy acids. Same principle as AHAs, pause these in the weeks before your appointment.
  • Photosensitizing medications. Certain antibiotics, acne medications including doxycycline, and other prescription drugs increase the skin’s sensitivity to light. Let your provider know about any medications you’re taking so they can advise appropriately.

Your provider will give you specific instructions based on your skin type and current routine. Follow those instructions exactly, even if they differ from general guidelines you’ve seen elsewhere.

What to Avoid in the Days Immediately Before

Beyond the longer-term preparation, a few things are worth avoiding in the days just before your appointment:

  • Self-tanning products, which can affect how the skin responds to light energy even when no actual sun exposure occurred
  • Waxing or other hair removal methods that affect the skin’s surface in the treatment area
  • Any new skincare products you haven’t used before, since introducing something new right before treatment isn’t the time to test for reactions
  • Blood-thinning supplements like fish oil, vitamin E, or aspirin if not medically necessary, as these can increase bruising risk

What to Do on the Day of Your Appointment

Arrive with clean skin. Skip the makeup, lotion, and perfume in the treatment area. Your Esthetician will cleanse the skin before applying a cooling gel and beginning the treatment, but starting with a clean face simplifies that process and reduces any potential for product interactions.

Wear or bring sun protection for immediately after the appointment. Your skin will be more sensitive to UV exposure following treatment, and stepping out into the Valencia sun without SPF is counterproductive to everything you’re trying to accomplish.
